The information on this page has been updated on May 16, 2008. Please read through the information on this page before you attempt to access your email to see if any of the updated information applies to you.

The extended dates for Daylight Saving Time (DST) will impact computer systems. Electronic calendar systems such as Outlook (Exchange) will be affected. The start and end time for online calendar appointments during the extended DST period may be a problem. Phones and other mobile devices may also be affected.

We anticipate appointments that may be impacted will occur during the Extended DST dates. These dates are between:

· March 9, 2008 and April 6, 2008, and

· October 26, 2008 and November 2, 2008.

Please go to http://ist.njit.edu/ and review the DST news article for more information and instructions. We recommend that you print a copy of your calendar BEFORE Sunday, March 9th to ease verification. Call the HelpDesk at 973-596-2900 if you have questions or need further assistance.

Q1: What information is on this page?

A1: This page contains information and Frequently Asked Questions about accessing the faculty and staff email system known as ADM. (top)

Q2: What can I use to read my mail?

A2:It is recommended that faculty and staff users accessing the 'ADM' mail system use a full version of the Outlook client to access their mail. Helpline at Ext 2900 can give you more information about obtaining, installing and using the latest full Outlook client. There is also a web interface available at http://adm.njit.edu. This interface is provided as a convenience and is not meant to be a substitute for the full Outlook client. See Q10 below for more information about the web interface. (top)

Q3: What if I don't use Outlook? What if I use Outlook Express or  some other email client?

A3: You will have to read that client's documentation to manually reconfigure your email client to connect to 'ADMCLUSTER' instead of 'ADM' until the phase out of 'ADM' is completed. (top)

Q4: I use Outlook Express and it looks like I either don't have access to folders in my inbox or they were lost. What happened?

A4: Outlook Express is light version of Outlook that does not have all of the functionality and capability as the full version of Outlook. For example it lacks the functionality to automatically subscribe to public folders and/or folders in your inbox. You will have to manually configure the mail server to 'ADMCLUSTER' and also subscribe to any folders you may have access to. (top)

Q5: How do I log on to the web interface?

A5: Depending on the version and type of web browser you use, a user may see a logon dialogue box that consists of either 2 or 3 entry fields. If the dialog box has 3 entry fields you will have to enter your credentials in the form of:

USERNAME: YourUserName

PASSWORD: YourPassword

DOMAIN:       NJITDM

If your logon dialog box only has 2 fields you should enter your credentials in the form of:

USERNAME:  YourUserName

PASSWORD: YourPassword

(top)

Q6: I''ve entered the information as indicated above, but I still am unable to logon. It now says "admcluster.njit.edu\username" or "machinename\username" in the username field. What should I do?

A6: Depending on your browser type, version, patch level, and configuration, you may need to re-enter your username and password like this:

USERNAME:  NJITDM\YourUserName

PASSWORD: YourPassword

Microsoft has a Knowledge Base article (#253615) listing which browsers are supported in Exchange 2000.  For security and compatibility reasons, as well as Microsoft's discontinuation of support for it's earlier browsers, we recommend you use a fully updated version of Internet Explorer 6 to access your email through the web interface. (top)

Q7: I've done all this but I am still having problems viewing my mail through the web interface. What can I do?

A7: We strongly recommend that you upgrade to the latest version of Internet Explorer 6 with 128 bit encryption and all of the latest updates. This will resolve many compatibility issues as well as provide a better level of security while reading your email.

Download the latest version of Internet Explorer 6.0 SP1. Please be sure to read the system requirements for installation of Internet Explorer 6.0 SP1. (top)

Q8: Is the Outlook Web Interface equivalent to the full Outlook Client? Can't I just use that?

A8: No. Microsoft's own documentation states that the Web Interface is presented as a convenience and is not intended to replace the full Outlook client. The web interface lacks functionality such as a spell checker. It also relies heavily on technologies that are only available in later versions of web browsers. (top)

Q9: How come some attachments or emails don't open us in the web interface but will open using an Outlook client?

A9: The error page informing you that the email cannot be read states:

PLEASE NOTE: If you are seeing this error after you have tried to open an email through the Outlook Web Interface - it may be because the subject of the email you are trying to view contains the following invalid character sequences:
